Road Diary 2002

The Royal Mile.

SUNDAY, NOV. 17:
HARRY POTTER DAY

Sunday morning is for reading “Scotland On Sunday” -- my favorite foreign newspaper. But I’m disappointed to find one of the female columnists I most love to hate, is no longer writing for the paper.

Today we shop our way down the Royal Mile, across the George IV Bridge and down Leith Walk to the new Warner Village Cinema that opened on Thursday.

On our way, we pass one of my favorite bronze sculptures. It’s a huge open-palmed hand about 12 feet in length and right in the middle of the palm are two huge fornicating grasshoppers. As I’ve asked in previous writings, what was the artist thinking?

The new cinema offers many theaters. Three are “Gold Class,” for 18 and older. There is a reception area with a bar where you can enjoy a drink and complimentary snacks prior to viewing the film. The high-backed comfy seats are arranged in pairs. A call button allows you to summon a waiter for service during the film. These tickets cost 12.50 = $21.00 US.

We’re here to take Cheyenne to the new Harry Potter movie. She read all the books and is anxious to see the next volume on the screen. The film is sold out, so we buy tickets for a 4 PM showing, then go across the street for pizza. The young waiter is so focused upon Cheyenne, he almost forgets to give us menus. Near our table, there is a mural in which wine is pouring out of an overturned bottle. Tara stands under it, as if the wine were pouring on her head, and I take a snapshot. Some of the patrons look at us with a “crazy Americans” look.

Back at the theater, standing in line to await entrance, we watch an old man dressed as a clown making balloon animals for children. When he spots Cheyenne, he tilts his head to the side, smiles, abandons the tots and rushes over to make something for his “new girlfriend.” The balloons soon form an engagement ring with a big purple heart on top. And as the line begins to move into the theater, the old guy follows along professing his love. Tara and I look at each other. This is how men in general are beginning to respond to our daughter, who at 14 looks 16 or 17. Inside the theater is the biggest screen I’ve seen shy of IMAX.

I manage to stay awake through Harry Potter, something I couldn’t do during the first installment. That’s not a film-reviewing comment, just a statement of fact.
