Bliss and Dick with group members in front of White House Ruins in Canyon de Chelly.

7-Day Escorted Arizona Adventure

A Mystical Tour With
Dick Sutphen & Bliss Wood

September 3-9, 2006
(Seminar 2006-25)

Limited to 10 People

Sedona Vortex Explorations, The Hopi Reservation,
Horseback Riding In Canyon de Chelly,
The Navajo Reservation, Plus All-Day
Jeep Tour Through Monument Valley

Join metaphysical authors Dick Sutphen and Bliss Wood for an experience of a lifetime, limited to only 10 people. Dick has explored and written about Sedona and the Hopi and Navajo reservations most of his adult life. Bliss grew up as an “honorary Hopi,” because her grandfather headed the Hopi Reservation school at Orabi. Today she draws upon her Native American bloodlines in her teachings. Together, Dick and Bliss will guide you to places few visitors ever see or experience.

The adventure will begin in Sedona, home of the beautiful red-rock formations that have framed dozens of Western movies. This is the location of the world-famous psychic vortexes that have turned the town into a metaphysical Mecca. Dick introduced the world to the vortexes in his 1978 book, Past Lives, Future Loves (Simon & Schuster Pocket Books).

DAY 1: At 9 AM, Dick and Bliss will the meet the participants at a Sedona hotel for a two-hour orientation and altered-state conditioning session. Bliss is a renowned yoga teacher and the author of Empowering Your Life with Yoga. She’ll be offering yoga exercises throughout the trip to keep everyone limber. After the orientation, we’ll take two four-wheel-drive vehicles out into Boynton Canyon. Dick and Bliss will lead you into the Boynton Canyon Vortex. This canyon is the spiritual home of the Great Mother to the Yavapi Indians. Wear good climbing shoes (not flat bottomed sneakers). The climb is moderate, but you’ll want to be sure-footed. We will make our way up to Indian caves high in a cliff wall overhang. The ceiling of the overhang is still black from the smoke fires of native people who once lived here. This is the best meditation place in all of Sedona.

DAY 2: We’ll explore three vortexes today. Airport Mesa, Bell Rock, and Cathedral Rock. Each vortex area has its own properties and Dick and Bliss will explain and direct group meditations. Airport mesa is a short walk from our vehicles. Both Bell and Cathedral offer lower meditation areas that will place you well into the vortex energy. Vigorous climbs will await those wanting to be more adventurous. You will personally experience what you’ve been reading about for years.

DAY 3: We’ll be up early for our drive up Oak Creek Canyon (one of the most beautiful drives in Arizona) to Flagstaff, Winslow then to the Hopi Reservation. The drive will take approximately 3 hours. On the reservation we will stop to shop at Second Mesa galleries and Native American craft shops. We’ll then proceed to the top of First Mesa (7,500 ft.) and visit the Pueblo village of Walpi. A Hopi guide will show us this amazing site dating back to the 13th century. Hopi craftsman still live and work in their homes, and we may be invited in to look at the exquisite pottery, kachina dolls and other crafts. We will spend the night at the Hopi Cultural Center Inn. According to Hopi prophecy we have entered the “end times,” and in the evening, Dick will share this knowledge, which he has been collecting for years.White House Ruin, an Anasazi Pueblo built into a
wall of the canyon and dating back to 1200.

DAY 4: We’ll drive across the Navajo Reservation to the town of Chinle on the edge of Canyon de Chelly (“pronounc ed de shay”). Dick says, “Maybe it’s my Western orientation, maybe past lives, but to me, this canyon is the most beautiful place on earth, and riding horseback between those cliff walls is more enjoyable than anything I’ve ever done.“ Today, we will drive around the upper edge of the canyon, stopping to experience the various views and to take photos. If time allows, those who desire can make the trek down a trail to the canyon floor and then hike over to White House Ruin, an Anasazi Pueblo built into a wall of the canyon and dating back to 1200.

In the background is one of the
  Anasazi ruins we will pass
as we journey into the canyon.DAY 5: Participants will choose to visit Canyon de Chelly on horseback or in an open vehicle. We will enter Chinle Wash where the sheer red-rock canyon walls soon begin to ascend. At some points in the canyon they reach as high as 1000 feet. We will pass scattered settlements and ancient ruins. The canyon floor remains green and fertile year round. The beauty of this terrain explains why the valley has been inhabited for so long. Throughout the Southwest, the Anasazi disappeared around 1300. The Navajo have lived here for the last 300 years.

We will eat a Navajo lunch at Thunderbird Lodge. The squaw bread, Navajo tacos and green-chili cornbread are to die for! After lunch we’ll drive about 100 miles to one of the most scenic areas in America-Monument Valley. You’ll experience the wonder among the monuments-the buttes, mesas, canyons, and free-standing rock formations that defy gravity. A local restaurant will offer a choice of Navajo fare or standard cuisine. The afternoon will be for shopping and an orientation.

DAY 6: We will take an all-day motorized tour of Monument Valley. The front cover of this magalog was taken by Bliss while on the tour. Be sure to bring lots of film or a digital card that will allow you to shoot to your hearts content. Photos among the red rocks in the afternoon sun transcend reality. At this time of year the sun sets at 8 PM, and the average daytime temperature is 70 degrees.

Monument Valley on the Navajo Reservation. There is a unique
energy here--a spiritual stillness unlike anywhere else.
Many visitors have reported unique meditative experiences.DAY 7: Sadly we will have to return on day seven, but we’ll stop at Navajo trading posts as we cross the reservation. Lunch will be in Flagstaff, and we should be back in Sedona by mid-afternoon.

Fees & General Information

The fee for this small escorted seminar is higher than in April because we are now covering all seven days of lodging, and the lodging prices are higher this time of year. The fee covers three breakfasts and three dinners while we are on the Navajo reservation. All other meals will be up to the individual to cover. Although Bliss is a vegetarian, we cannot guarantee you’ll have veggie food choices available. Keep in mind, although this isn’t the wild west of yesterday, it will certainly be a glimpse into a more earthy way of life and is a far cry from a walk in the park.

The schedule and sites might change depending upon weather, conditions, and opportunities available at the time. We will always be on the lookout for photo ops. Although you don’t need to be an ironman/woman to participate, you should be capable of moderate rock climbing and have the ability to hike for an hour at a time.

This adventure is limited to 10 people. The fee is $2,200. It covers transportation, Dick and Bliss’ guidance and training, seven nights of lodging (two people per room), two days in Sedona and the rest on the reservations, plus horseback riding in Canyon de Chelly, and the half-day Monument Valley tour. A non-refundable (but transferable) deposit of $400 is required to hold your place as one of the 10 people going on this adventure of a lifetime! The full fee will be payable by August 7, 2006.
