NOTE: This article was originally released as a free audio tape given to those ordering from Valley of the Sun, September 1996. The information has been gathered by the Sutphen staff from international sources: doctors, professional newsletters, research studies, books and authorities in various fields. The concepts include: sex and relationships, success, health, safety, diet, security and general awareness. Check with your doctor before making any lifestyle or dietary changes, or before using products discussed in this article. 12 Substances That Will Diminish Male Sexual Performance There are 12 primary substances, other than prescription drugs, that are known to diminish sexual performance in men: 1) hard liquor, 2) lemon and lime juice, and 3) quinine. These substances make up a gin and tonic drink or a vodka and tonic drink. So, if you plan to have an amorous evening, and think these drinks will lower your inhibitions, know that they may keep you from rising to the occasion. Other common substances that will diminish sexual performance in men: 4) aspirin, because it thins the blood too much to be retained in the erection, 5) cocaine, 6) sodium bicarbonate, 7) antihistamine over-the-counter cold, allergy or sinus medicine, 8) potassium nitrate, which is saltpeter, 9) lemon juice, 10) tobacco, because it constricts the blood vessels, impeding erections. In one study of impotent men, over a third resolved their problem simply by giving up cigarettes for six weeks, 11) vinegar, and 12) watching excessive television. Here's another fact that should probably be mentioned here: serious long-distance runners were found to have nearly a third less testosterone and prolactin, which are the hormones needed for sexual drive. A zinc deficiency can cause impotence. Tests indicate that 50 milligrams of zinc daily will significantly increase sperm counts and serum testosterone. The herb ginkgo biloba is proving to be a great help to those experiencing reduced blood flow to the penis. Some men report that after taking it daily for a couple months, they experience a difference. After six months, many have reported a return to full potency. It's available in most health food stores. Take one 40-milligram capsule or tablet daily. Yohimbe Bark is another product that many say will increase sexual potency, but it can also increase blood pressure. In the past it was only available through prescription, but yohimbe is now available in many health food stores or from direct-mail vitamin suppliers. When it comes to low sex drive, the most common culprit in America is called television. Research proves that two-thirds of the time when you're watching TV, you're in an altered state of consciousness. Now that doesn't mean you're tranced out. It just means that you've focused your concentration fully upon the TV show. But an altered state also generates the release of beta endorphins and enkephalins. These are brain opiates chemically almost identical to opium. So what happens? You feel relaxed and you feel good. In fact, sitting in front of the TV may be the only time you totally relax. But because it feels so good, it becomes addictive. Especially if this is the only time you really relax. Now there is nothing physically or mentally harmful about the release of these brain chemicals. It happens naturally to long distance runners, meditators, and many others as the result of focused activity. The endorphins and enkephalins help you to detach from your stressful life. But like smoking grass, or taking prescription tranquilizers, you detach right across the board, from the positive as well as the negative stress. The brain chemicals generate detachment from warm interaction with loved ones, from sex and even from hobbies that might stimulate your mind. Aphrodisiacs Dr. Morton Walker and Joan Walker, authors of the book Sexual Nutrition, suggest aloe vera as an "excellent aphrodisiac drink." Dr. Robert Picker of the Berkeley Holistic Clinic in Berkeley, California claims to have used it with over three hundred people, with phenomenal results. In addition to it's aphrodisiac properties, aloe vera is considered to have many other health benefits. Whole leaf aloe contains components that possess significant immune enhancing and antiviral properties. Doctors are using it to as part of the treatment to fight AIDS, arthritis, Epstein-Barr, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, because it stimulates antibodies and T-cells, thus it hastens the regenerative phase of healing. Be sure to get whole leaf aloe vera concentrate, opposed to aloe drinks. It can be found in most health food stores. Take a few tablespoons a day. Honey is considered an aphrodisiac. This may be because honey is a sugar, and provides sustained high energy. Nutritionists often suggest a couple table spoons of honey and two 400 I.U.s of Vitamin E to provide about four hours of high energy. The vitamin E increases oxygen in your system and is considered by many to be an aphrodisiac. Honey is an easily metabolized sugar, rich in B-vitamins, enzymes and amino acids. After taking honey and vitamin E, do a little exercise--yoga or running in place. This helps to pump the energizers through your system. Some nutritionists warn not to take honey and vitamin E if you've been drinking within the last twenty-four hours, because it can work in reverse--as a downer rather than an upper. The use of honey as an aphrodisiac is mentioned in both the books, Kama Sutra and The Perfumed Garden. Here it is said that honey spiced with nutmeg is said to heighten an orgasm. Chocolate is also claimed by many to be an aphrodisiac. Again, this may be due to increased energy generated by the sugar, as well as a small amount of caffeine. Back in the seventeenth century, monks were not allowed to eat chocolate because it was believed to generate sexual desire and lewd fantasies. Strychnine, L-dopa, yohimbe, and Spanish fly are also considered aphrodisiacs, but they're dangerous and/or illegal without a prescription. Improve Your Love Life To improve your love life, it's wise to investigate sexual nutrition overall, and vitamin supplementation in particular. Male and female sexual function is related to basic body chemistry and if you're not getting enough of specific vitamins and minerals, your body can sexually shut down. As an example, for male sexual function, in addition to the vitamins in a good daily supplement, the body needs some additional elements that may or may not be available in your diet. Your body needs iodine, SOD, selenium, RNA/DNA, maganese, bromelain, L-cysteine, choline and inositol. You must investigate your particular needs very carefully, or obtain the advice of a holistic doctor. High Energy For men and women, high energy is a basic component of good sex. And it can also be of value to really relax and unwind for better sex. Diet can help. When you desire to be particularly alert, eat high-protein foods such as fish, chicken, low-fat dairy products and beans. When you want to relax, eat carbohydrates. Different brain chemicals are more active when you're alert than when you're relaxed. Proteins contain "energizing" chemicals, while carbohydrates, through a complex metabolic pathway, allow more tryptothane -- a protein component that enhances relaxation into the brain. Turkey contains a lot of tryptothane. Don't take a nap or go into meditation to increase energy. For most people, these remedies may reduce stress, but they won't increase energy. Instead, you need to generate blood sugar, increase your fluid levels and potassium, reduce your lactic acid and supercharge your brain cells. Breath deeply for a few minutes, and take an exercise break. Do ten minutes of active stretching, calisthenics, jumping jacks, walking or jogging. By combining exercise with the previous ideas, increased energy is guaranteed. Even if you're stuck in an office building you can walk up and down the stairs for ten minutes. Wide Awake & Fully Alert Here's a good trick if you're tired but need to be alert ... maybe to take a test or give a speech? Caffeine will help, but it can make you jittery. I've already mentioned honey and vitamin E and it works. But here's another suggestion. Niacinamide is available in most drug stores and any health food store. It is buffered niacin -- a B vitamin. If you take niacin it enlarges the surface blood vessels, causing a tingly flush that most people consider uncomfortable and distracting. Know too, if you take niacin, the more water you drink with it or after you take it, the more intense the flush. But 500 milligrams of niacinamide will enlarge only the deep-level blood vessels, causing a rush of blood to your brain. As a result, you'll be wide awake and fully alert. This intense alertness lasts only about twenty minutes, so take the niacinamide ten to twenty minutes before you need it. You may have to experiment for the proper timing for your body.
