Tara Sutphen's Personal Notebook Continued

Dec. ‘01
(Continued)

Tara & Li'rica, Sept. 2001

Tara & Li’rica. Sept. 2001. Photos by Brian Murray.

I have been training two teams of equestrian teams for the Eco Challenge. This year it was held on South Island, New Zealand. To my horror, the contest started off with the horse event and Brian, my best team rider, was bucked off at the beginning of the race. His horse ran off never to be seen again. I read the news on the Eco-Challenge Website and felt like crying. Brian wasn’t hurt enough to stop racing, but they only had one horse for their four-person team. I am pleased to report that both my teams did finish this grueling race (“Team Cure Parkinson’s” and Team Strange & Carpenter”).

I am also very sorry to be belatedly reporting the passing of metaphysical author Ruth Montgomery. She died June 10, 2001 in Naples, Florida where she made her home with her late husband Robert Montgomery. Lily and the guides we’re all so familiar with from her books, surely welcomed her home. Her books will live on and teach many ... and we wish the family, friends and her fans peace.

In October, a childhood friend of mine named Steven was in a helicopter crash over Cook Inlet, Alaska. My mother has been a best friend with his mother since first grade, so this is how I heard the following story: Steven was in the front seat when the helicopter began to have engine trouble. He opened the door and prepared with the five others to get out as the chopper plunged into the icy water. But he was sucked down with the sinking craft -- submerging deep into the sea. Then his brother Duane appeared to him and told him, “Pull the cord and the lifejacket and I’ll push you to the surface.” Steven managed to do it and survived although some of the others did not. And the punchline to this story: His brother Duane drowned in 1976 on the Naknek River. It’s nice to know that each of us has friends and loved ones on the other side who want us to fulfill our earthly journey and accomplish all we set out to do.
