Tara Sutphen, April 2001

Spring in Malibu -- the hills are green, the days are warm, moon rituals and pagan ceremonies plentiful among friends and family and horseback riding has never been better.  Love is in the air and Jason my brother is heading toward the altar.

Engagement Announcement

Engagement Announcement for Sumire Okuda and Jason McKean, April 2001.

While recently in Malibu, Mark J. Plotkin, Ph.D invited us to join him for an evening at Beaurivage restaurant. Mark is author of “Tales of a Shaman’s Apprentice” and “Medicine Quest” and also wrote the Academy Award nominated IMAX film, “Amazon.” Some of his supportive friends in TV and dot.coms were sponsoring a dinner for Mark, an ethnobotanist, to present his work on the rain forest to interested locals. Proudly on display was a map printed only days before charting Indian tribal lands. Mapping is a way to try and save the lands otherwise being taken over in Government, Corporate and Commercial agreements. Without the jungle, the world could lose knowledge and medicinal formulas that have been handed down through generations of Shamans.

Mark Plotkin and Shamans

Mark with taita Santiago Chicunque and his wife doña Concepcion just before the presentation of the Code of Ethics two weeks ago in Colombia. The are Kamsa shamans (who stole Mark's heart).

In the Amazon, western medical clinics work side by side with tribal clinics. One of many remarkable stories Mark told was about a woman with Diabetes. The Shaman mixes four types of plants together, and when the woman drinks the liquid remedy she will not need to come back for a month. No needles, no shots, only a medicinal drink. It is very important that we support groups such as ACT. For more information on Mark and his projects go to: www.amazonteam.org

Kofan Shamans

Photo taken at 6:00 a.m on April 3rd with all Kofan shamans and apprentices (except with the one with the white cusma -- he's a Siona -- the Kofan wear black). The elder behind Mark’s wife Liliana (she’s in white) is 104 - the guy squatting next to her is Dr. German Zuluaga, ACT's Colombia Program Director.

Candace Hoke attended our Professional Hypnotist Training with her husband Jimmy Don last October. They came from Texas, primarily interested in learning to block her terrible ongoing pain due to an accident in which her back was broken and she brain hemorrhaged. Candace sent us the following letter in January:

“Your pain control CD has been fantastic. I am able to take the reconstructive therapy without the usual anxiety due to the pain of the therapy. I only feel enough pain to let me know where there is really a major problem. I need that amount of pain to be able to work with the doctor. But -- what Stadol and scores of other drugs have not been able to do -- hypnosis has. The doctor is aware of the hypnosis. Actually, he promoted our going to your seminar as he has another patient who uses hypnosis during his sessions. At a recent World Show (horse show), a fellow competitor was so shocked at the difference he wanted to know what I had done. He said it was the first time since the accident in 10/93 that he has seen me smile and be sociable. He wanted some of whatever I was taking. And the vet commented on the change to my face.”

Thanks for sharing Candace. We’re in hopes of hearing of a complete recovery.
