July 14, 1999: The Standing Stones of Callanish on the Isle of Lewis. Look closely to see Tara standing in front of the big stone in the center (the chambered tomb within the central stone circle is in front of her). This was the position where the chief Druid stood to address the people. (See "Road Diary 12" to read about Tara's contact with the spirit guardian of the stones.)
Tara at the Stones of Callanish, which were erected between 2900 and 2600 BC -- predating Stonehenge. The stones form a Celtic Cross. Some researchers believe the Christians took the Celtic Cross from this site as part of the absorption of Paganism into the new religion.
Stones of Callanish. Tara at the end stone (bottom of the cross). From here Pagan processions would proceed up the walk through the stones forming the bottom stem of the cross.
