Giving Up Hope Giving up hope is an interesting concept in the book “Emotional Resilience” by David Viscott, M.D. (Harmony Books 1996). David feels that hope interferes with the natural healing process by causing you to await something or someone to save you, which will cause you to postpone saving yourself. He feels that hope is denial. You come to the conclusion that things aren’t as bad as they appear to be. You rationalize your situation by assuming that maybe things will get better, or the other person will see the light and love you again the way you want to be loved. Instead of hoping, he wants you to accept what is and move on to make the required adjustments as quickly as possible. “Typically you count on hope when you’re most afraid. You are going to have to face the loss or danger by yourself anyway -- why lose time hoping for things to get better while they only get worse?” he says. “Hope is a reflection of powerlessness, a child’s cry for its mother to deliver him in the face of the fearful unknown. Hope has destroyed more lives than any other emotion, by thwarting the normal instinct to save yourself. Hope keeps you from growing.” David calls for you to give up hope and accept that the way things are is the way they’re going to be. “Instead of hoping, believe in yourself and act.” Fascinated with the idea of giving up hope, I decided to see what a very different kind of teacher had to say on the subject. Osho (Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh) says, “Hope is a disguised form of desire. And unless one drops all desiring in all forms, disguised or undisguised, one cannot attain to one’s own reality.” “Drop hope,” Osho says, “But whenever I say to somebody to drop hope, he thinks that I am telling him to become hopeless. No, I’m not doing that. When you drop hope there is no possibility of becoming hopeless, because hopelessness exists only because of hope. You hope and it is not fulfilled; hopelessness arises. You hope, and you hope again and again in vain; hopelessness arises. Hopelessness is frustrated hope.” More often than not in this column, I write about concepts that sound good, but are difficult to apply -- easier said than done. So once again, I had to process myself by asking, “When have I turned to hope instead of facing the facts?” Try it yourself. Close your eyes, take a few deep breaths, quiet your mind, and ask the question. Trust the first thoughts that jump into your mind. If you’re like me, you didn’t have to look far. So I asked myself for further advice and trusted the next words I perceived in response to the question. “Karma means action. If you want things to change you have to act. Give up hope and act.” So I circle right back to my own philosophy. Good luck on giving up hope. * * * * * All Dick Sutphen Master of Life Columns can be read at www.dicksutphen.com / click on “Articles & Columns” Dick’s NEW “Theta-Level MIND CONVERTER” CD is the “Zapper” combined with a human heartbeat to make it even more powerful.
