Letting Go The New Age is big on “letting go.” Flow naturally with life and life will work better, things will go smoother. You can find daily opportunities to embrace this flow in almost any area of your life. My daughter Cheyenne recently presented me with a birthday wish list. About to turn 14, she most wanted a mini-fridge for her bedroom. “A mini-fridge?” “Hunter (almost 16) and his friends drink up everything good. I want to protect my share,” she said. Logical. “What’s this,” I asked. Under CDs, she had written, “house music,” “base and drum” and “jungle music.” “They’re musical categories, all sub-genres of Techno, but whatever you do, Dad, don’t get me Techno.” I nodded. “It’s the music you don’t like, Dad.” I continued nodding. I love music and I keep up with what’s happening in a dozen musical areas. As a voting member of the Grammy organization, I annually vote for what I perceive to be best. But Cheyenne’s sub-genres, by any musical standard, are not very musical. They’re more like a very intense “thud, thud, thud, drone, drone, drone.” Of course I went to Tower Records in search of my daughter’s birthday request. In all my years of buying music, I had never before needed help. But upon finding no musical section that seemed to relate to my needs, I decided assistance was required. The girl with a dozen face piercings seemed my best bet. I showed her the list. “Oh, yes. These are all sub-genres of Trance.” she said. “I thought they were sub-genres of Techno,” I replied, wanting to sound aware. “Techno is a sub-genre of Trance, so these are all really sub-sub genres,” she explained as if talking to a child. I nodded, followed her to “Trance Music” -- a huge section with the most bizarre CD covers I’ve ever seen. “How will I know which is which?” I asked. “If it says ‘house music’ on the cover, you can be assured that’s what’s on the album,” she said. “That’s too logical for me,” I said. She raised her eyebrows and two silver piercings glinted in the fluorescent light. To make a long column short, I did pick out “really cool” music according to Cheyenne. And as a result of my experience, I decided that there are areas of life where it’s best to let go. You can’t keep up with everything (upon hearing this music, I no longer want to).
Additional Metaphysical Lessons: WHAT IS, IS: My definition of music is not everyone else’s definition of music. And that’s okay! (I don’t believe that for a moment, but I’m going to say I do.) THAT WHICH YOU RESIST YOU DRAW TO YOU: I am evidently resisting those sub-sub genres. Guess what I hear at ear-shattering volume every time Cheyenne opens her bedroom door? RESISTANCE IS FEAR, THUS THERE IS A LESSON TO BE LEARNED: I’m really not afraid of the music, unless of course I have to listen to it.
