Spiritual Partnerships

Gary Zukav talks about the “new male,” “new female” and “Spiritual Partnerships.” The new males and females have transcended cliché gender roles and approach life with confidence and expanded viewpoints. They follow their hearts on a spiritual journey. Authentic power is their destination.

The new males and females have new ways of relating. They look at their deepest fears, and they talk openly about them. They do not desire to control others. They seek to establish harmony, co-operation, sharing, and reverence for a Life created together. They’re partners in spiritual growth. Love and trust, not marriage vows keep them together. They’re best friends who enjoy each other. And they’re equals.

“That is what a spiritual partnership is -- a partnership between equals for the purpose of spiritual growth,” says Zukav in “Soul Stories” (Simon & Schuster). “We are all beginning to want spiritual partners, and to create spiritual partnerships. Shallow talk isn’t enough anymore. Making money, raising children, and buying houses aren’t enough. Only spiritual growth satisfies.”

No matter the label, we’re all karmically evolving, growing, and moving through cycles in which we’re attempting to become something more. Zukav claims Spiritual Partners come together to learn and when the needed lessons are resolved, they will choose to remain together only if they can continue to grow together -- only if their partner is not holding them back.

I like the idea of “Spiritual Partnerships.” New Agers will identify. Yet the ideas are not all that different from those expressed in the early 80s by Osho in regard to revamping marriage. Osho stressed that a marriage based upon traditional values and dependence was not love. Dependence means “conflict, anger, rage, hatred, jealousy, possessiveness and domination,” he said. He felt the term “marriage” was poisoned and wanted to call his new form of union “loving togetherness.” There would be no promise of tomorrow, because this moment is enough. “And if you love each other this moment and if you enjoy each other this moment, if you can share with each other this moment, the next moment will be born out of it; it will become more and more enriched. As time passes by, your love will become deeper, it will start having new dimensions, but it will not create any bondage.”

Osho wanted couples to be together not out of need but out of overflowing joy. “Marriage has to go the way it has existed up to now and a totally new concept has to be introduced. Only then can a new man be born on the earth,” he said.

I’m going to wrap up this column by sharing related words from the last page of my 1976 book, “You Were Born Again To Be Together.”

“Being totally idealistic, what would ‘real love’ be like?

“To begin with, it could not be diminished by anything the other person said or did. Your love would not be dependent upon being loved. You would give freely, without any expectation of return. In an environment of ‘real love,’ you would allow total freedom to your mate, expecting no more than the other could give. You would love for what the other was. You would not expect your mate to change, to be something he or she was not. You would find joy in the other’s happiness. To really love someone, you need to be complete within yourself, and without fear. You then will find joy in the positive aspects of your relationship and allow the negatives to simply flow past you, without affecting you.

“Most of us are far from attaining true love. Even if we believe in it, it is sometimes hard to live it. But what a beautiful relationship this involved-detachment would be. By accepting and granting freedom, not out of indifference but out of tenderness and caring, a couple can overcome karma and evolve beyond the level of problems. Since you would no longer be affected by the problems, you would no longer have the problems. Karma would be balanced, and your own wisdom would have erased the need for further learning.

“If fear is the problem, love is the answer. Universal love. The goal of everyone now living upon the earth is to rise above fear and learn love. Most are unaware of this fact, but it is the reason we are reborn, over and over. We all subconsciously seek love, and love’s perfection. If we cannot remember what we have forgotten, we will be given another chance to find it, when we are together again.”  (End of book excerpt.)

You can’t change what you don’t recognize. If the above ideas do not echo your own relationship and you desire this form of relating, what can you do to establish such a union? Think about it. Changes always start with desire combined with clarity of intent. When you desire and know what you want with no indecisiveness whatsoever, you’re well on the way to manifestation.
