This is a 1978 book on how to “Transform Your Relationships.” I don’t think it is currently in release, but if you can find a copy, it’s one of the best human-potentials books of that era. Most people’s relationships are an expression of need, and they are disasters. No relationship that is built on need will work. A relationship built upon need is a constant attempt to answer the eternal question “How do I avoid losing?” Relationships are not usually based upon jointly and joyfully exploring the marvelous adventure that life has in store. They are based upon a desperate desire to make it through this horrible jungle called the world. It is not “I want to be with you.” It is “I can’t make it without you.” It is not “I want to be here, and I want you to be here.” It is “I want you to be here, because I need you to be here and I won’t make it if you are not here.” Can you feel the difference in your own experience of these two emotional spaces? One is freeing, and the other is binding. One is supportive and the other suppressive. One encourages growth and the other is threatened by it. Once a relationship is based upon need, it becomes a question of who has more control. More specifically: “How am I going to control the source of the satisfaction of my need?” When that becomes the question, we stop experiencing the other person and begin to think of ways to manipulate and control the source of the satisfaction of our need. (end of Emery quote) Once we agree that our well-being is dependent upon each other, we’ve introduced a bigger need -- to keep the relationship as is, and in so doing we erect a cage that keeps us focused upon survival rather than the adventure of living. Emery suggests that instead of trying to control each other’s behavior, especially when our partners are not with us, we make a new kind of agreement: “When I am not with you, I will conduct my life in a way that supports my ability to be with you when I am with you: when I am not with you, I will not do things that interfere with my ability to be with you when I am with you.” That’s a very freeing concept, and it would require two secure adult partners to set it into play.
