Suffering Buddha says, “Life on earth includes suffering.” We lose loved ones, our hearts get broken, we get sick, we’re betrayed, we have accidents, we experience career setbacks and financial losses. Buddha also says, “It is your resistance to what is that causes your suffering.” This of course is true, but you would have to have developed “detached mind” to a super-human degree to immediately rise above such suffering. Last night, driving two-and-a-half hours from Westlake Village to Lake Arrowhead, CA, I talked to close friends on my cell phone. Two of them are heartbroken. Both are in love with married men, and after long-term affairs, the men are breaking off the relationships to stay with their wives and families. My friends are suffering. And I’m sure their lovers are suffering as well. In both cases, the men’s wives are aware of the affairs, so they too must be suffering. Maybe everyone made poor choices and there is nothing more to it. But my experience tells me they made soul contracts, before they were born, to have these experiences. From a karmic perspective, everyone signed on for the lessons to be learned. Part of each person’s lesson will be how they handle the conflict. Anyone who responds with long-term anger, desires revenge, or becomes manipulative will probably fail this earth class, and will have to take it again later in life, or in a future life. Those who can “let go and let God” and respond with compassion, or even neutrality, will probably pass this class and may not need future lessons of this kind. And part of the lesson is for you, because you subscribe to this column and you’re reading these words. As observers of suffering, we are offered karmic opportunities. Remember, everything we think, say, and do creates karma, and that includes the motive, intent and desire behind everything we think, say and do. “Think” is a keyword here. How do you judge women who have affairs with married men? I have another friend who is divorcing her husband because he has had a long term affair. She is disdainful of his lover. But my friend had a brief affair during the time of her husband’s indiscretions. Karma gets very sticky in such situations. So it’s best to accept other people as they are without judgment, expectations, blame or attempting to control. Judge only in regard to what works for you. Sometimes the only way to be responsible to yourself is to remove yourself from the environment you find yourself within. I have conducted hypnosis sessions with my friends to help them understand the cause and effect. And I will do so again. This will not alter circumstances, but an understanding of karma can help you accept what is. In addition to accepting what cannot be changed, what everyone involved needs more than anything else is compassionate listeners -- friends who are there for them. Yesterday, between a recording session and over my meals, I texted back and forth with another friend who was flying across the country to be with her father. He clinically died the night before. They resuscitated him, he is in the hospital, but he may not have long to live. My friend is suffering. In each situation, all I can do is project light, love and support, and offer hypnosis to ease their anxiety or explore cause and effect. That doesn’t seem like enough.
