BUTT CRACKS You’re probably asking yourself, “How is he going to spin ‘butt cracks’ into a metaphysical column?” As I begin this week’s missive, I’m not sure myself, but I just got off the phone with a friend, and it was one of the subjects we discussed. At a recent retreat, I ended up conducting an early morning yoga class. This wasn’t planned, but some of the participants wanted to start their days with yoga, and I was invited to lead the group. As it worked out, some of the students were more advanced than me. In preparation for a side twist, lying flat on my back, I said, “Pull your right heel up into your butt crack, and then with your arms extended, twist slowly to your left, pushing your knee to the floor while your head turns to your right.” There appeared to be a stunned silence in the room. I noticed one of the women looking at me, withholding a snicker. The term “butt crack” is so common to me, I didn’t think about using it. Now if I were a trained yoga instructor, I might have said, “bring the heel of your right foot up to your buns. After all, “Buns of Steel” is a bestselling exercise DVD. But that doesn’t quite cut it. This particular yoga stretch is best when your heel is planted between your cheeks. As a writer, the way words invoke reaction is always a fascination. If I use the word “naked” in the subject line of my column, readership doubles and people mention it in seminars for months afterwards. “Butt crack” transcends gender. Everyone reading this column has one created by cheeks that are big or small, soft or firm, white, brown, or sunburned. The term should be as bland as “elbow,” but it isn’t. It obviously titillates. During a question and answer session in the “8-Day, 100-Hour Professional Hypnotherapy Training” I co-conducted in Ft. Lauderdale two weeks ago, one of the female participants said, “I really get stuck on part of your hypnotic induction.” In the induction, I say, “The relaxing power is now coming into the toes of both of your feet at the same time and is moving right on down into the ball, into your arches, into your heels and right on up to your ankles. Completely relaxed, completely relaxed . . . “I get stuck on ‘balls,’” she said. “I say ball, singular, to try to avoid that association,” I said. “I know, but I visualize ‘you know what’ every time you say it.” She blushed. I decided then and there to change the wording of my induction. Back to talking to my friend on the phone: I said, “I have to write my column tonight.” “What are you going to write about?” she asked. “Maybe butt cracks,” I said. “Uh huh,” she said. “Can you make it spiritual?” “Everything is spiritual. Meditating, walking the dog, ironing, drinking wine, butt cracks. All spiritual.” “Okay. Are you having wine with dinner, Richard?” “When we make judgments as to what is spiritual and what isn’t, we get into trouble. We’re here on earth to learn and grow and everything in life offers us this opportunity. So everything in life is spiritual.” “So you’re saying you have a spiritual butt crack?” “No. And yes, I just finished a glass of wine.
