Saturday night, the tropical heat on Bourbon Street was oppressive, and so crowded with merry-makers we could barely make our way through the throng. Dixieland jazz exploded out of one venue, then half a block down the street it was rock and roll, then a little farther on, back to jazz. On the second-floor balconies, young men urged young women walking the street to flash their breasts in return for beaded necklaces. We had a late dinner in the “Court of Two Sisters,” a famous New Orleans eatery. It had rained earlier and water dripped from the tropical plants and palm trees on the candle-lit patio. The wine, a catfish dinner and the camaraderie was as good as it gets. At midnight we were still exploring the shops, laughing at obnoxious T-shirts which I cannot imagine anyone wearing. Robert bought some Harley Davidson shirts. I purchased a feathered mask for my daughter Cheyenne and T-shirts for the other kids saying, “Make Music Not War.” Kathleen and I bought each other cool New Orleans T’s. Earlier, Kat and I had explored the Quarter on our own. During the day it was probably 110 degrees and 100-percent humidity. She wore black jeans and a sleeveless Tom Petty concert shirt, I was wearing Levis’ and a sleeveless black T covered with Zen symbols. We had stopped in a tile store offering beautiful fired ceramics celebrating New Orleans themes. The man and woman sitting behind the counter explained that they had created all the offerings. Kat and I each purchased a trivet, and as we were leaving the store, the woman asked us, “Did you both ride all the way here on your bikes?” (motorcycles) She had checked our driver’s licenses and knew we were from California. I didn’t think I’d heard her right, but upon observing the look on Kat’s face, I realized I had. “No, we flew here to participate in a conference,” Kat said. The woman shook her head. She knew we were really bikers and were trying to hide it. On the street I broke into laughter. “I do not project the image of a biker,” I said. “It has to be you. Maybe female bikers wear Tom Petty shirts.” Kat pointed at me, laughing, “Long hair, sleeveless black T, faded Levis’ and worn cowboy boots? You’re a perfect biker.” I have less than zero interest in motorcycles. This is not an image that works for me. The cowboy image is fine although not much more accurate. Although I’ve always owned horses, I am hardly out there riding the range. Admittedly, while on the road, people often ask if I’m from Arizona or Texas ... but never from the Hell’s Angels. “I think you’re pissed,” Kat said. “I should have worn a sport coat,” I said. “You preach about not caring what other people think,” she said. She was right. Society molds people into ladies and gentlemen, which I see as phonies and hypocrites who wear masks of proper attire, manners and etiquette. Ladies and gentlemen do the “right thing.” They’re conventional characters playing roles in a play. They’re so concerned with what other people think they lose their own identity. And when you accept the expectations of others, they will dominate, cripple and paralyze you. Expectations are the enemy of freedom. And when you give away your freedom, you succumb to your fears, and you close down and burn out.
