Chaos Radio Like a vampire on a search for sustenance, every Wednesday morning I must seek out a telephone landline from which to conduct my radio show. Last week, I had decided to drive from a seminar in Sedona, AZ to a Labor Day appearance at the “Celebration Fair” in Denver, CO. After driving most of the day, I found a hotel in a tiny New Mexico town, and I planned to do the show from my room the following day. Wednesday morning, the hotel manager, who had checked me in the night before, was still at the desk. He wore a perpetual frown and spoke poor English. I asked for a late checkout. “Nah, nah, nah.” Waving his hands deepened the furls in his brow. Checkout time was 11 AM. I needed to be on the air between Noon and 1 PM New Mexico time. He managed to communicate that his cleaning staff needed to leave by noon. I lapsed into assertiveness-training mode. “I understand that,” I said, “and I need to conduct an hour radio show over a land-line telephone beginning at noon. What can we do about this?” (Repeat-technique.) He looked at me blankly, slowly shook his head and mumbled something about cleaning girls. “I understand, and I need to conduct a radio show over a landline telephone beginning at noon.” I did three more rounds of this. The man’s frail little paisley-clad wife who had been sweeping the lobby with a wide broom, now decided to sweep around and around me. The manager threw up his hands. “How can you do this?” “I use a phone card to call my radio station, and my guest calls in, and the engineer mixes us, and he sends our conversation over the airwaves. That’s why I need to use a land-line telephone to ...” “What is this show about?” he asked. Although I would have guessed the man to be Hindu, hand-colored pictures of Jesus and the Virgin Mary had been taped behind the check-in counter. I decide not to mention the show is titled “Dick Sutphen’s Metaphysical World.” “Human potential,” I said, which was accurate for this day’s show. After repeating my request for the fifth time, the manager appeared to go on “tilt.” “Okay, okay, okay.” He waved his hands and explained that I could sit in the room and use the phone, but I must not use a towel, or sit on the bed or use the toilet. But for this to happen, I had to check out of my room immediately so the girls could clean the room. Agreed. I studied show notes and correspondence in the lobby until shortly before noon. The manager scowled as I walked to his desk, but he coded a plastic room key and handed it to me, eyeing me suspiciously. Sitting down at the desk in the freshly-cleaned room, I felt anxiety about the program. I never feel anxiety before a show, and today I was going to be talking with best friend Carol Morgan, Ph.D. We do the show together once a month, and I can totally relax when Carol has my back. I did, however, request a “most benevolent show outcome” from my angels before calling the radio station. Carol was already on the line. We small talked with the engineer for a couple minutes and then we were on the air talking about maximizing self-discipline. I said something about the importance of determining exactly what you really want in life, not what you think you should want. A moment later the noise level of the room increased triple fold. A maid in the hallway decided to vacuum outside my door. “Whump.” The vacuum hit the door. For the next five minutes this roar continued, and I had no idea how much of the noise was going out over the airwaves. If the noise was distracting to Carol, she didn’t show it. Next, I heard the line open up and obviously the manager was listening in, because the hotel lobby noise was providing background for my conversation. When I left the lobby, a dozen people were gathering to discuss a family reunion. Then Carol’s voice faded away. The radio station’s state-of-the-art phone system had gone down the week before, and they were using an unstable loner system. I jammed the phone hard into my ear, and far, far away, I could barely make out my co-host’s voice talking about changing your personality. Hoping the broadcast feed was balanced, I tried to keep up my end of the conversation. At 20-minutes after the hour, I announced the commercial break. My engineer usually comes on to give us the all-clear sign. This did not happen. I said to Carol, “Maybe we’d best just keep talking about the subject at hand, because I’m not sure we’re off the air.” Bless her. She bounced into the conversation as if nothing unusual had happened. We had been on the air, and the engineer soon returned and apologized. While the commercials played, he rebalanced Carol’s voice. Near the end of the show, just when I thought nothing more could happen, the phone cord snapped out of the end of the receiver, shot past my line of sight and under the bed. Stunned, I looked at the unattached hand-set for a moment before diving for the cord, grabbing it and snapping it back into the receiver. Carol was still there, and we were still on the air. All I could do was laugh. She said she thought her line had gone dead, and she was wondering if she should hang-up and call back. As the ending theme music came up, I thanked her profusely for her support. We both wanted to go have Margaritas at a favorite hangout in Dayton, OH. Only problem, it was 2000 miles from New Mexico. As chaotic as the show was (IS, because it’s available as an archive choice at www.contacttalkradio.com), I believe we made a lot of good points about increasing self-discipline. The hotel manager was nowhere to be found when it was time to leave.
