Set Me Straight

My weekly e-mail columns are not spiritually correct. No matter what I say, I offend someone. Even if it’s a throw away line meant to be humorous, there is a reader in cyber space just waiting to set me straight.

Sometimes I see it coming. Sometimes not, as in my recent column about medical intuitive and healer Patti Conklin. I described how one person at a time, she pulled disease out of all the participants at a hypnosis conference. She takes the disease into her own body and then purges for days. I explained how after the healing session, I took Patti to get a beer and a steak (protein), which helps her to recuperate.

A couple dozen people wrote complaining about Patti’s need for meat and beer. To them, the fact that she isn’t a vegetarian somehow discredits the work she does saving lives. The column ran a few weeks ago and the protests continue to come in. Today I received a letter from someone claiming if Patti buys their multi-level marketing product -- a vegetarian fruit concentrate, it will replace her need for protein.

I wrote about being taken for a motorcyclist by a shop owner in New Orleans. It was a very hot day and I was dressed in a black sleeveless T-shirt, black jeans and cowboy boots. I said it was the first time I’d been mistaken for a Hell’s Angel.

Linda W. wrote: “You’ve stereotyped people who ride motorcycles as Hell’s Angels, when in fact there has been quite a lot in the media in recent years about the fact that a growing number of people who are buying motorcycles are older, professional, urban, and female. Check it out. You certainly don’t need to be spreading such an inaccurate image of a mostly respectful group of people.”

Linda was one of many who set me straight about this.

Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh (Osho) once wrote about the fact that society molds people into ladies and gentlemen, which can be perceived as phonies and hypocrites who wear the masks of proper attire, manners and etiquette. They become so concerned with what other people think they lose their own identity. My paraphrasing this concept sent a dozen people running to their computers. Merri said, “Wow, Richard, is that judgmental?” Emmy said, “They just want to be loved and belong, and they will go to any lengths to get it. Sounds like your 15-year-old-self talking.” Ellen said, “I heard this kind of talk in grade 7 ... people are sucked into a reality that is dictated by TV, news, education, etc.”

In my “Chaos Radio” column a couple weeks ago, I talked about using an Assertiveness Training repeat technique to resolve my need for a late hotel-room checkout. I needed the room an extra hour to conduct my radio show over the phone.

Linda B. wrote to tell me that the chaos I experienced that morning was because, “you bullied that poor man into going along with your needs in spite of his needs. Yup. We all do that and we all generate ‘cosmic noise’ when we do.”

But for everyone setting me straight, I usually receive a couple dozen notes from people like Joanne R. who responded to the Chaos Radio column with this note: “Sounds hilarious to me.”

And let me end by saying that all reader’s comments are appreciated. Sometimes I do need to be set straight.
