MY SPACE?

For years I’ve been surrounded by people staring blankly at computer screens filled with little pictures of “My Space” people. And I have to admit that I’ve never “gotten it.”

“It’s a friend’s site,” I was told. “You collect friends kind of like baseball cards. You get to meet people from all over the world. Some use it for dating, some network, some just like to communicate with people who have the same interests.”

I have a hard time keeping up with my closest living, breathing friends via e-mail -- maybe 30 people. I chose not to explore My Space.

But now the National Guild of Hypnotists is encouraging it’s members to create “My Space” sites as communications and marketing tools. A hypnotherapist friend encouraged me to think outside the box, because in the web-world marketing has become a whole new game. I’ve certainly learned that with my radio show.

So I went to www.myspace.com, looked around, felt overwhelmed, and asked my 21-year-old son Hunter to help me out. He has digital genes.

A couple days later he had me up and running, and he picked a picture of me to put on the site. “But you’ll have to add additional photos and fill in the profile section,” Hunter explained. “And then add blogs, Dad.”

“What’s the difference between my weekly column and a blog?” I asked. He shrugged his shoulders in response.

Tara added me as her friend. So did Hunter and my son William. Somehow some other people’s pictures appeared as friends and I have no idea how they got there. I have not yet learned how to add or subtract friends. All my advisors have been very patient in responding to my ignorance. “People will come in and ask to be your friend. You have to say yes or no. Photos of your real close friends will be at the top, then others are added below.”

I checked out friend B.J. Thomas’ My Space site. He has all his upcoming tour dates listed and his close friends are pictured at the top. Then I clicked on his other friends and he has pictures of 5662 people.

“Five thousand six hundred and two friends?”

“Shane has over 20,000 friends,” Tara said.

“Nobody can have 5662 friends, 20,000 is ridiculous,” I said. Shane is a real friend and a successful film producer. “Where does he find the time to deal with this?” He must just add everyone who asks.

Tara admitted that her My Space world has been getting a little overwhelming, so she whittled her friends down to a manageable 173.

“Maybe this is a bad idea. I’ll need two or three extra days a week to devote to My Space,” I said. I have to have help to respond to the people who write soaringspirit.com and sutphenseminars.com. Between doing private sessions, seminars, creating new CDs, writing a weekly column and doing a weekly radio show, I’m already on “tilt.”

Fellow hypnotherapist Kathleen Shannon is creating a site. For her it will probably be a snap, because she just created her own website: www.pastlifeparty.com. My friend Meghan Hansen is already a My Spacer and we agreed to project our friendship into the digital world. I’m assuming I will soon learn how to do this.

I’m in daily communication with Carol Morgan, Ph.D. She’s my co-writer, co-trainer, and a radio co-host once a month. “If I do My Space, you have to do My Space,” I said. She agreed to play along, because she can see cross-marketing potentials for a project we’re working on. But although Carol is a university professor, she was as overwhelmed by the My Space website as I was. She enlisted the aid of her step-daughter Jessica -- age 19. Obviously Jessica also has digital genes.

The first step into this world amounted to answering a lot of silly profile questions and  posting lots of photos. I used a recent column to get the hang of blogging. I now have a couple evenings devoted to this project. My site is pretty bare bones by comparison to Tara’s, which is a flowering creation. She also has a private site just for the 173. A private site for the “special few” is more than I need to know at this stage.

www.myspace.com/dicksutphen is a work in progress. Don’t laugh if you’re an experienced My Spacer. (NOTE: If you want to look at posted pictures you have to join up, but that only takes five minutes and it’s free.)

Now that I’m on my way, my only fear is addiction. I never, ever want to find myself late at night staring blankly at a computer screen filled with little pictures of people I don’t know.
