Mandatory Evacuation

I watched the progression of the Malibu, CA Fire on TV all day Sunday (Oct. 22) from our Lake Arrowhead home. I was on and off the phone with Tara who was in Malibu. Friends were being evacuated, but the fire was several miles from our house. If residents left the area they would not be allowed back into Malibu until the crisis was over.

Monday morning, shortly after turning on the TV to check conditions in Malibu, a fire was announced in Lake Arrowhead. I dashed out onto my deck and saw huge plumes of smoke coming from two directions -- one seven miles away (Slide Fire) and the other, much closer -- no more than a mile or so away (Grass Valley Fire). The Santa Ana winds, combined with a dry forest and low humidity had created perfect conditions for wildfires.

Carol Morgan texted me for an update on the Malibu Fire. We had been back and forth on the phone many times the day before. I texted her back sharing the fire conditions in Lake Arrowhead. The previous week we had spent several days together in Dayton, OH working on a book/website project we’re co-creating.

I called Kathleen Shannon who would head up the support team at the Sedona Psychic Seminar

the next weekend. Kat had planned to come to Arrowhead that afternoon, and we’d drive to Sedona together. I told her I might have to evacuate. She told me to come to her house in San Juan Capistrano.

It was 8:30 AM. My cell phone beeped. The text was from Carol. “Get out of there!!!!! C:)”

I texted back, assuring her that I was safe. My Land Rover was already packed with all the materials for the seminar, and my personal bags were almost ready to go. But from the look of the fire situation, I decided it would be wise to gather everything I could fit in the car, in case I needed to make a run for it.

My cell phone rang, Carol was determined to talk me into leaving immediately. “Richard, this is how people get KILLED.”

I’ve gone through this fire evacuation exercise a few times. The big question always is, “What am I going to take with me in one car load?” In the past it was always the kids, the animals and photographs for starters. But there were no kids or animals with me in Arrowhead and most of the photo originals were in Malibu. The Arrowhead house is packed with important records, scripts, CD masters and writing projects. On the walls is favorite Native American decor, some award-winning paintings and major career awards. The idea of choosing what stays and what goes is an overwhelming process. I started putting items in black trash bags. The only book I took was my Arizona Cookbook (all the recipes I know how to cook). This surprised me when I realized it after the fact.

Carol called but I didn’t hear the phone and she left a message. She was getting upset with me but was handling it well. “Richard, PLEASE, get out of there right now.”

My neighbor told me a mandatory evacuation had gone into effect. We were supposed to leave immediately. I quickly packed the Land Rover with personal treasures and things that would be impossible to replace. Kathleen called back. The fires were now also burning in Orange County, but her house appeared to be in a safe location near the sea.

Carol decided the only way to get me to evacuate was to call me every ten minutes. I could tell by her voice that she was scared for me. And she did manage to get me off the mountain at least an hour earlier than I would have on my own. As it was, I drove out of the community through totally deserted streets, and pulled to the side of the road as five fire engines from the flatlands roared into town to help the local firefighters. A DC10 tanker plane would soon start making water drops.

I asked my angels for a most benevolent outcome as I moved past road blocks blocking entry. Traffic was slow on the descending rim road that drops from 5500 feet to near sea level. Every vehicle was packed with rapidly-gathered belongings. Animals looked out the windows of many vehicles.

Eight days later (Oct. 31), I returned to the mountain to find my home unharmed. But 374 homes were lost in the area, and 2013 homes were lost in Southern California. Over a half-million acres were burned and seven people lost their lives due to the fires. Some of the fires were started by arsonists, in one case a 12-year old girl, and in another, a 10-year old boy.

I’m still thanking my angels, and I’m asking them to stick around, because this weekend the Santa Ana winds are predicted to return.
