What You Most Fear

What you most fear doing is probably what you most need to do.

Think about that line. What do you most fear doing?

A woman in a recent seminar told me that she and her husband were living together but leading separate lives. They had not been intimate in two years. “I love him but I’m not in love with him,” she said.

“What do you most need to do?” I asked.

“File for divorce,” she said without emotion.

A man in his mid-forties said, “I need to seriously begin searching for a new job. I find no satisfaction in my current work. I want to do something that serves the planet, not take advantage of it.”

“If you’re going to do what you most need to do, you need to take action,” I said to the group. “Action is the root meaning of the word karma. If you want things to change you need to act. Who else is willing to talk about what they fear doing?”

“I want to start a hypnosis practice,” said a man in his thirties. “But I fear not being able to make a living at it. And I don’t think they’d let me practice without all kinds of licensing.”

“In California and some other states there is now an ‘alternative practitioner” law that will assure you can practice, if you have your clients sign a paper explaining you’re an alternative practitioner,” I explained. “It takes 50 hours training to be become a hypnotist, 100 hours training to become a Master Hypnotist, and 150 hours training to become a Hypnotherapist. With some marketing expertise you can certainly make a living as a hypnotist. A good living.”

“I most fear asking my girlfriend to marry me,” said a man in his fifties. “I’ve been divorced for ten years and I’ve been dating a wonderful woman for the last two years. But I don’t know what I’ll do if she turns me down.”

“If you insist on keeping one foot in the safety zone, you’ll never be able to experience your full potential for joy,” I said. “Even if she says, “No,” would that mean the end of your relationship?”

“Probably not,” he said.

I raised my hands in a gesture of futility.

He laughed.
