Multi-Tasking Technology

On a recent Sunday morning Kathleen Shannon called me. She said she was in a small restaurant with WiFi overlooking an ice rink, video taping her son Sean play hockey while also building a new hypnotherapy website on her laptop. “And you’re talking to me on your cell phone wearing a headset?” I said. Multi tasking.

Saturday night, Carol Morgan texted me, saying she was going into the Detroit, MI arena where Keith Urban would be giving a concert. We both love his music. “Aren’t you jealous?” she texted. “Gary Allan is the opening act.”

“I like Gary better than Keith,” I texted back. “Yeah, jealous.” Thus began dozens of texts back and forth over the next three hours. Carol would take a picture of the stage with her phone and send it to me, along with descriptions of what was happening.

Sitting at my computer in Lake Arrowhead, CA, I put a Keith Urban CD on the stereo while I worked on my writing ... taking a break every few minutes to send reply messages to Carol. A new full-keyboard phone allows me to type with double thumbs almost as fast as I can on my laptop. Sometimes I love technology.

A few days later Carol did my radio show with me as she does once a month. From her office phone at the university in Dayton, OH, she called into www.contacttalkradio.com in Seattle. I called in from Arrowhead. Engineer Cameron Steel mixed the show and sent it out live to our listeners. In addition to those listening live or visiting the archives, over 80,000 people have subscribed to have the show downloaded into their iPods so they can listen when it’s convenient.

Carol and I were talking about the downward spiral that causes people to fall out of love with each other. Unfulfilled expectations and unmet needs generate resentment, which in turn generates conflicts, which results in emotional pain, which in turn causes a couple to become hypersensitive to each other. This destroys respect and trust, resulting in dislike. The loss of feelings of love and affection are then soon to follow.

Two days later another friend called from Northern CA. He was listening to his iPod which was plugged into the audio system of his car. “I’m driving to the airport and listening to you and Carol talk about how relationships spiral down,” he said.

As we talked, my cell phone vibrated. A little voice said, “Message received.” A text from Carol appeared on the screen. “Whatcha doing?”

Technology allows me to multi-task and remain in close contact with my key people. But just when I think I’ve got technology handled, something happens to show me I don’t. I recently purchased a high-quality, land-line phone. It came with a digital screen and a 40-page instruction book. After two quick rings it went to voice mail, and for the life of me I could not figure out how to make it ring longer. I gave up. Kathleen came up to Arrowhead, and I explained my phone frustration. She looked at the phone, fiddled with it. “There,” she said. “now it will ring six times.”
