I'm Spiritual And You're Not A conservatively dressed woman in her forties stood up in a seminar to exchange words with me. "I really don't like the way you talk about spirituality. I'm not so sure you're very spiritual," she said. "Really?" She nodded. "I'm a very spiritual person. My values are spiritual. My friends are all on a spiritual path. And I meditate every single day, do you?" "Nah," I said. "If you did you'd be more spiritual," she said. "Maybe this is your last earthly incarnation?" "Probably," she said. "Would you take out your checkbook?". She looked at me funny, but did as I asked. "I'd like you to scan though a few pages of check entries. Take a moment to do that." She complied, then looked at me with a "so what" expression. "You've just seen your values in black and white. How spiritual are they?" She looked flustered. "Well ..." "Tell me about your family relationships." Not wanting to talk about her checkbook entries, she quickly replied, "I have a good relationship with my brother, but my sisters and I haven't been in contact for years." "Is that spiritual? No matter what the problem between you and your sisters, it seems to me a little unconditional acceptance and some compassion and forgiveness might be in order." "Well ..." "How do you use your spare time?" She didn't answer. "Which races are you most prejudiced against? She started to answer, then thought better of it. "What causes you to get angry quickly." By now she was aware of the game and no longer willing to play. She sat down. I turned to the other participants. "The basic problem is comparisons. I'm spiritual and you're not. I'm black and you're white. I drive a Honda and you drive a Volkswagen. You're a Republican and I'm a Democrat. Comparisons. Labels. They generate division, which is not very spiritual. "Everyone on earth incarnated to resolve their karma and fulfill their dharma, which means they're on a spiritual journey -- a spiritual path. Maybe this time around, you use your time to more karmic advantage. If you keep that goal out front lifetime after lifetime, you may reach Nirvana a few lifetimes faster. Does that make you more spiritual? I doubt it. It just means that you made it maybe 12 lifetimes faster than Billy who works at the gas station down the street and lives to drink beer and go bowling. He has never seen the inside of a church, nor has he meditated or ever heard of white light. Yet he incarnated to learn and grow by confronting life's tests, just as you did. But here you are spending two days in a spiritual seminar. I don't know ... for what you spent to attend this event, you could have bought a lot of beer and done a lot of bowling. In the end it won't much matter. You and Billy will probably get to heaven at just about the same time.
