I Hate Snow

I am sick of snow. At first, I wrote, “I hate snow.” But hate is too strong an emotion to waste upon weather. Besides, Southern CA needs snow to bring all our water reserves back to normal levels.

I also remind myself that I’m being wimpy. People in the North, the Midwest and back East deal with real winter all the time. Today, one of my clients told me she’s been snowed in for three days in Kent, OH. During the commercial breaks on my radio show today, my co-host Carol Morgan told me she and her two sons were experiencing “snow days” in Dayton, OH, and she had cabin fever.

But I’m a South Westerner. I didn’t sign on for this. In 15 years of having a vacation home in the Lake Arrowhead, CA, I have never seen anything like this winter season. We have California winters, which means we get light snows once in a while, and they usually melt within 24 hours.

On Jan 23^rd, three weeks ago, it started snowing here and it didn’t stop. Kathleen Shannon drove to the mountain to accompany me to Las Vegas for the American Board of Hypnotherapy Conference. She would handle the Valley of the Sun sales table. I was teaching a couple classes. We escaped from Arrowhead in my Land Rover, but by the time we reached the rim road, police were demanding that people coming up the mountain put on chains. Returning a week later, snow was plowed four-feet deep along the roadways, and ten feet deep in parking lots.

In trying to drive up my driveway we got stuck in a mixture of snow, ice and mud that took us hours to dig out of. Attempting to free Kathi’s SUV proved to be a nightmare. Among her parting words were, “I’m not returning to the mountain until spring. But come visit me in San Juan Capistrano.”

Of course, I’m free to leave the mountain. It doesn’t snow in San Bernardino 25 minutes below my house. It doesn’t snow at my office in Westlake Village, and it doesn’t snow in San Juan Capistrano where I am currently hiding away beneath sunny skies, rustling palm trees, and a warm breeze off the sea.

The snow is “what is, Richard,” I tell myself. It is your resistance to what is that causes your suffering, Richard. What you resist you draw to you, Richard. What you resist persists, Richard. “Shut the *%#*! Up! I hate snow.”
