Lottery Fairy Tale I’ve never purchased a lottery ticket, simply because I’m not willing to give up the five minutes it would take to stop at a store and purchase a 50-million-to-one gamble for a dollar. To me, those odds don’t justify any expenditure of time or money. However, many close friends regularly purchase lottery tickets and I always wish them winnings. A daily purchase would amount to a time expenditure of at least 35 minutes a week (over two hours a month), and then I’d have to keep track of the tickets and commit more time to discovering if I’d won. This would surly entail another couple hours a month and some anxiety about keeping the tickets in a safe place so I could produce them when the big moment arrived. Plus all those losing tickets cost money. I could have purchased a couple music CDs, or some pretty good lunches, or maybe even a few shares of stock. Some of those I know who purchase lottery tickets believe that winning would resolve all their problems. A little research on that subject, however, will show that those who have won opened Pandora’s box. Not only are lottery winners universally less happy than before they won, studies have show that instant wealth is more stressful than sudden poverty. What is most interesting to me about the lottery, is how it has become an updated version of the Cinderella fairy tale. Instead of Prince Charming stepping in to provide a wonderful life, you, “the chosen,” attain wealth to the same end. In 1997 we conducted a “Millionaire Mind-Set Seminar” in a dozen cities. The participants came in the doors convinced they wanted to be a millionaire. But after a full day of exploring mind programming and the real cost in terms of time, effort, energy, and sacrifice, over half the participants decided by the end of the day to seek their happiness without trying to attain great wealth. Here’s an important question for those who dream of winning the lottery: “What would winning allow you to do that you can’t do without winning?” Sure you could buy this or buy that. You could walk away from the job you can’t stand or the mate you no longer love. But you could do that anyway. Money would make it easier, but you could do it without winning the lottery. More often than not, money is about power, choice and control. In other words, money isn’t the real issue when you dig down deep. Disagreements over money is the primary cause of divorce in America. But money is inert and in this case a symbol. Such disagreements are really about taking responsibility, or exercising power, or trying to control one another. So back to the lottery. It only costs a buck to take a chance on a dream. True. Who can argue with that ... unless the dream is keeping you from acting ... keeping you asking the right questions .... keeping you from doing what you want to do without waiting for a windfall excuse. * * * * * TO RECEIVE THIS “Master of Life” COLUMN WEEKLY AT YOUR E-MAIL ADDRESS, CLICK HERE AND IN THE “SUBJECT” SLOT TYPE “Subscribe”.
