Synchronicity

I am eternally fascinated with the subject of synchronicity -- the simultaneous occurrence of two meaningfully but not causally connected events.

The following is from “Incredible Coincidence” by Alan Vaughan. Alan worked for me as an editor for several years in the early 80s and we conducted several seminars together. At the time he was considered the world’s most accurate psychic by the Central Premonitions Bureau in NYC.

The book begins by asking, What Is Synchronicity?

Have you ever experienced a coincidence so incredible that if left your mind reeling? Like these:
• A 1972 sex novel parallels, in baffling detail, the 1974 kidnapping of Patricia Hearst.
• George D. Bryson registers in a hotel and, as a lark, asks for mail. He is given a letter for the previous occupant of his room, another George D. Bryson.
• A lead coffin is swept to sea by a hurricane and floats two thousand miles -- home.
• Edgar Allan Poe’s horror story of shipwrecked sailors who kill and eat a cabin boy named Richard Parker becomes a horrible reality fifty years later, when shipwrecked sailors kill and eat a Richard Parker.
• A writer doing a book on an Alcatraz prison break finds the only person in the world who witnessed it -- by chance, at a party.
• A German housewife discovers the ring she lost forty years before -- inside a potato.

If you have experience such an event, you have taken a step into the baffling world of synchronicity. Coined by the eminent Swiss psychologist Carl Jung to describe meaningful coincidence without apparent cause (acausal), the term synchronicity has become increasingly familiar.

Skipping to the back of the book, Alan sums up the meaning of synchronicity:

My cases of incredible coincidence indicate some surprising things that our common-sense reasoning may find it hard to accept:

1. We seem to be connected by psychic links of consciousness.
2. Our life dramas show evidence of psychic synchronization with those of others.
3. We each seem to have a psychic blueprint of life that dovetails with the blueprints of others.
4. We have apparent unconscious foreknowledge of our life’s blueprint.
5. We seem to possess extraordinary psychic ability that functions on an unconscious level.
6. If we are prone to psychic experiences, then we also seem more prone to synchronistic experience.
7. Synchronicity, or meaningful coincidence, seems to be the resultant vector of the enmeshed consciousness of several individuals, each of whom contributes psychically to the coincidence.
8. What we call psi -- extraordinary perception and psychokinesis -- may be evidence of consciousness in operation.
9. Psi seems to operate in far more complex ways that are usually recognized by parapschylogy.
10. The usual rules of space and time, of cause and effect, do not apply to psychic and synchronistic events.
