Scary Movies Are
Good For You?

Here’s an idea inspired by Dr. Brugh Joy that’s sure to upset a few spiritual purists: Horror films will improve your life! Murder mysteries can balance your energy! Gory TV emergency-room shows may keep you from ending up in ER!

Before you object too loudly, hear me out. This is a three-part equation:

1. Physicists tell us the Universe (and all energy) functions as a yin/yang balance resulting in tension between opposites. Yin is negative, yang is positive. We all contain these dual aspects; love/hate, harmony/chaos, good/evil. Intuitively you know you must express your yin/yang duality, because this tension is necessary for structure to exist. Human beings are structures ... energy structures. And without tension, you don’t exist.

Dr. Brugh Joy says, “Life seeks to be fully expressed.”

For just a moment, don’t think of positive as good and negative as bad, because “the balance” doesn’t label. In an automobile battery, the plates are alternated, positive and negative , and the tension between them generates energy. The positive plate isn’t a “good” plate and the negative isn’t “bad.” They just are.

The most common expressions of yin energy are arguing, fighting, frustration, anxiety, self-denial, excess hard work, gambling, dangerous activities, accidents, extramarital affairs, drugs, drinking, and illness, from a common cold to a terrible disease. War is the ultimate expression of yin energy.

2. Controlled reality/fantasy tests have shown the subconscious (programming portion of your mind) does not distinguish between imagined events and real experiences. If you watch a man painting a picture while your brain waves are monitored, a unique pattern will be recorded. Any other experience will generate a totally different brain-wave pattern. But if you vividly imagine the man painting a picture, your brain waves will generate the exact same pattern as created by the real experience. (This is why the “mental movie” or “visualization” portion of mind-programming tapes/CDs is so powerful.)

3. You are not served by most expressions of yin energy. Yet, as examples, arguing or self-denial may be necessary to fulfill the yin/yang balance in your life. Without this balanced energy you are not fully expressing yourself.

Some spiritual seekers are so blissful they have trouble functioning in society. They may be outwardly spiritual, but their lives are a mess. They eat a spiritual diet. They block all angry thoughts. They meditate by the hour. They espouse peace and harmony. And they’d never attend a horror movie because they “don’t want the negativity in their mind.”

In other words, they’ve repressed their yin energy to the point of becoming lopsided ... dysfunctional.

Over the long haul it won’t work. Yin/yang need balancing. Maybe

a scary movie will allow you to fully experience your yin energy for awhile. If so, you could then avoid an argument, skip that fight with your lover, or avoid catching a cold.

It sounds good in theory.
