Fear of Failing
Seminar Dialogue:
“I am so afraid of failing, it almost immobilizes me,” said Carla, a young woman in her early twenties who appeared to be attending the seminar with a boyfriend. “I’m afraid of failing in my personal life and in my career.”
“How many other people in this room can identify with Carla’s fear?” I asked. Over half the hands went up. “Success and failure is one of the false standards by which we measure our lives,” I
continued. “The way to measure your life is by your growth -- not success or failure, pleasure or pain. The rich man might be very successful by worldly standards, but if he has attained no growth, his life has
not amounted to much. The individual who has had a terrible life by worldly standards may have attained incredible soul growth, so it is he who is to be seen as an example. But back to you, Carla. What is it that
you fear?”
“I lie awake nights, thinking how terrible it will be if I don’t succeed in my career as a nurse. And, in my personal life, I worry about my relationship with Tom, and I’m afraid something
terrible will happen and I’ll lose all my possessions. I know it is irrational, but knowing that doesn’t really help me.”
I asked Carla if she wanted to explore her fears through regression and she
readily agreed. Once the altered state of consciousness was induced, I directed her to go back to the cause of her fear: “You are now there and the impressions are forming. When you can, speak up and tell me what
you perceive.”
A few moments passed before Carla said, in a soft voice, “I may have sent them to their death. Oh, my God, I hope not ... I hope not.”
“Tell me what is happening.”
“I’m a young officer. This is my first test in the field. I’ve deployed my men into that area over there, but maybe I should have ... maybe I ... oh, no ... OH, NO!”
At this point in the regression,
Carla became upset and I directed her to let go of the past and to rise up into the Higher-self level of mind and attain a karmic overview of exactly what happened. To condense her response, she explained that in
that life, she had attended military school and, upon graduation, began to serve in the army as an officer. When sent into battle for the first time, the young man made a tactical mistake causing many men to die.
Not only did he have to spend the rest of his life dealing with the guilt, he lost his ranking and was shamed in the service. When his enlistment was up, he left the army and spent the rest of his life running from
himself.
“All right, Carla, I hope you can understand how your past-life experience has programmed you with fears that do not relate to your present incarnation. Your subconscious mind is out of alignment
with conscious reality, and this no longer needs to affect you. From your present level of Higher Mind, I’d like you to tell me what you can do to release your fears.”
After a moment of silence, Carla
answered softly, deep in an altered state of consciousness. “I must accept that my experience as the young office related to karma I needed to experience in that time. The men who died were experiencing their own
karma. I was an instrument in their death, but mine was an honest mistake and my learning balanced two lifetimes of feeling smug, self-righteous and superior to others. One of those lifetimes was as a money merchant
in Mesopotamia and the other as a church bishop in Vienna in the early 1300s. From this time on, I must realize that I can let go of the effects and the fears.”
(NOTE: Although the Higher-Self technique is
usually effective in assisting a subject attain awareness, few people respond as quickly and accurately as Carla.)
