Getting What You Don’t Want In his book, “There’s A Spiritual Solution to Every Problem,” Wayne Dyer talks about focusing your energy upon what you don’t want. He asks you to imagine that you have a million dollars to spend upon anything you desire. So you go to a furniture store and spend $100,000 on furniture you find in terrible taste. Then you spend $100,000 upon jewelry you believe to be gaudy and overpriced. This continues until you’ve spent the million on things you don’t want. When your purchases are delivered, you ask yourself, “Why is my home filled with stuff I don’t want?” Well, because you were crazy enough to spend your money on items you didn’t want, instead of spending it upon what you did want. Dyer says, “Now keeping the above scene in mind, remind yourself that your thoughts are the currency for getting what you want in your life. Remember, your desires, requests, intentions, and passions are all thoughts, and when you place those thoughts on what you don’t want, regardless of how negatively you feel about it, you will act upon what you don’t want, and more of what you don’t want will show up in your life. Just like the hideous furniture and distasteful jewelry.” So my question to you is, how much time do you spend dwelling upon what you don’t want? Dyer goes on to say, “When you find yourself thinking a thought that focuses on what you don’t want, no matter how insignificant it might be, remind yourself that you will ultimately act upon that thought and it will materialize into your life. Stop yourself right there, and silently ask yourself, ‘What do I want?’” When you catch yourself thinking negative, block the programming power by thinking, “What I want is ...” and silently express it. I like this technique and I like a lot of what Dyer shares. But before you start reading, know that he is very “God” oriented. To me, he overstates the power of asking God for what you want. I can’t imagine God overriding the karma you need to experience just because you don’t like dealing with it. In reading Dyer’s book, I kept recalling Osho’s words, “I’m against prayer because it is basically business. It is bribing God. It is hoping that you can buttress his ego: ‘You are great, you are compassionate, you can do anything you want ...’ And all this is being said because you want something.” Charlotte Joko Beck is an author and Zen teacher at the Los Angeles Zen Center. In her book, “Everyday Zen,” Beck is questioned by a student desiring to let go of intrusive thoughts. In response she says, “I don’t think that we ever let go of anything. I think what we do is just wear things out. If we start forcing our mind to do something, we are right back into the dualism that we are trying to get out of. The best way to let go is to notice the thoughts as they come up and to acknowledge them. ‘Oh, yes, I’m doing that one again ’-- and without judging, return to the clear experience of the present moment.” This is the idea of being an observer, which I’ve talked about before. Don’t resist anything. Just observe what is happening. It’s your resistance to what is that causes your suffering. I’ll end this with a Zen story about a troubled monk who went to his Master to quiet his mind. “Let’s see,” said the Master, “bring me your troubled mind so I can examine it.” “But I can’t find my mind, sir,” said the monk. “Well then, I have quieted it down for you,” Said the Master. “Your mind is no longer troubled.” * * * * * TO RECEIVE THIS “Master of Life” COLUMN WEEKLY AT YOUR E-MAIL ADDRESS, CLICK ON “REPLY “ AND TYPE “SUBSCRIBE” IN THE SUBJECT AREA. TRACK 1: A talk provides the necessary understanding. TRACK 2: The altered-state session focuses your concentration like a laser to melt the molecules in the spoon. Matter is energy, as Einstein discovered and cutting-edge scientists have proven. What appears solid is actually made up of swirling molecules temporarily molded in their current shapes by vibration. Everything on earth, breaks down to subatomic particles. Energy is non-physical in nature, so our world of reality is more like a “thought form” than anything else. You, as one form of energy, can mentally interact with the subatomic particles of the spoon and mentally cause it to bend. Do this alone or in a group.
