Resisting Texas

The stereo in my Land Rover came on as Tara and I pulled out of our driveway. When driving alone, I usually play music loud, and the first words out of the speakers were, “SCREW YOU, WE’RE FROM TEXAS.” LOUD.

Tara scowled at the stereo, scowled at me.

“What you resist you draw to you,” I said, laughing. “It’s Ray Wylie Hubbard’s new album.”

My wife is a tolerant person and there is not a lot she resists, with the exception of expressions of high-decibel, chest-thumping TEXAS PRIDE. Myself, I love it. I love Texas, the music touches my soul, and I delight in Texans spouting the superiority of their state. I don’t know why this is. Probably a past-life thing.

While in Ft. Worth for a recent wedding, we went to Billy Bob’s, the largest honky tonk in the world -- 100,000 square feet, huge dance floors and an indoor rodeo arena for live bull-riding events. The headliner was Bleu Edmondson, a young alt-country rocker, who had no sooner taken the stage than he started screaming, “We’re not from *!#@*#* LA ... we’re not from*&!##! Colorado ... WE’RE FROM TEXAS.” He went on and on, working the audience into a jumping-up-and-down frenzy. Tara sat in disbelief, one hand squeezing the long neck of a Corona bottle, slowly shaking her head.

What you resist persists ... or follows you everywhere. I think we could go to a children’s Easter egg hunt and the theme music would be “Yellow Rose of Texas.”

Back to driving to the restaurant, I hit the button eliminating the “Screw You,” song. Next up, Kid Rock’s new album -- a song called “Midnight Train to Memphis.” The song doesn’t have much to do with Memphis. Within a few bars, he was singing about Texas.

I was about to hit the button again when in the middle of the song, Kid Rock switched from the ballad to expletive-laced rap. Now Tara laughed and started to the bounce to the music. She likes rap. “What you resist you draw to you,” she said. She knows I do not like rap.

“You bought this?” she asked. Surprised.

“I’m rising above my resistance,” I said.

Actually, I purchased the album for “Picture,” a Kid Rock & Sheryl Crow duet ballad, but found I enjoyed most of the album, rap songs and all.

“Resistance is fear. I’m letting go of my fear of rap and I’m spiritually evolving,” I said.

“Kid Rock is leading you into the light?” she said.

“Maybe if you listen to more Texas music, you too can spiritually evolve.”

I won’t repeat what she had to say about that, but I reminded her that it’s our resistance to what is that causes our suffering. The next song was “Tennessee Whiskey, Texas Weed,” by Jason Boland.

On that note, I turned off the stereo to avoid the suffering I perceived was soon to come my way.
