In an interview in “Science of Mind” magazine, Terry Cole-Whittaker said, “I don’t do the past.” She went on to explain, “No matter what our age or personal history, we always get another chance to attain the happiness, love, and prosperity that we desire. Often we get discouraged, thinking that we’ve made too many mistakes, we’ve failed too often, we’re too old, or we lack an indefinable quality that’s necessary for success. No matter what life has handed us, we should never abandon our goals and dreams.”
Terry was promoting her book, “Every Saint Has A Past, Every Sinner A Future.” In the book, she offers a formula to obtain the “spiritual and material riches of life.”
1. Desire the topmost.
2. Pray and ask for what you desire.
3. Seek knowledge of how to attain the ultimate.
4. Do what works, and don’t do what doesn’t.
5. Control your mind and be positive.
6. Upgrade on a regular basis.
7. Keep on keeping on.
She also asks you to agree to say good-bye to any regrets, resentments, or heartaches. Also, to take the lessons, gems, and pearls of wisdom from your past and leave the rest behind. Agree to set new goals and use the above seven steps to achieve them. And agree that today is the first day of the rest of your eternal life.
In the book “The ABCs of Enlightenment” Osho had this to say about the living in the past: “The mind lives in the past because it lives in knowledge. Knowledge means that which you have known, understood, learned. And existence is now and the mind is then, existence is here and the mind is there. The mind looks backwards; it is like a rearview mirror. If you are backing your car the rearview mirror is OK, but if you are going forwards then it is dangerous to go on looking in the rearview mirror. And if you become fixated on the rearview mirror you are bound to have an accident. You are in great danger, you are being suicidal. Life always moves forwards; there is no possibility of going backwards.”
I would add, when you live in the NOW, you automatically release the past. And you will also resolve the futility of living in the future.
As I point out in my 1980 book, “The Master of Life Manual,” we exist NOW and NOW is all that is. NOW is outside of time. There is no past in which you were incomplete and there will never be a future in which you will become complete. Until you accept that you can only exist NOW, you will believe that fulfillment awaits in an illusory future if you take the proper actions. This belief destroys the experience of NOW and you continually live in illusion.
This very moment is it. Nothing is hidden. All of your calculating and hoping and planning about how it will be someday ... all your dreams and plans ... THIS IS HOW IT ALL TURNED OUT. This is all there is. You’ve been planning all your life for the future, but you will never be aware of the future in the future ... you will only be aware of it in the NOW. We do not exist in time. We exist in self.
I am working on living in the NOW as I move forward into 2016. I want to take this opportunity to thank you for reading this newsletter, and to let you know I appreciate all the feedback I am receiving.
