Dick Sutphen introduced Sedona’s Psychic-Energy Vortexes to the world in this book, “Past Lives, Future Loves” (Simon & Schuster Pocket Books—Aug. 1978) unwittingly creating a major Sedona tourist attraction. He started offering his metaphysical seminars in the late sixties around Sedona. Once his books, CDs and seminars became popular in the mid-seventies, he based his early operations in Scottsdale, AZ, launched his Valley of the Sun Publishing and the Scottsdale Hypnosis Center, and began to travel around the world, sharing his teachings.
Sutphen first became interested in energy vortexes when reading metaphysical biologist Lyall Watson’s book, “The Romeo Error.” He wrote about an energy vortex in Prescott, AZ. Sutphen searched of it, but could find no evidence of such a phenomena. When asking about it in a Sedona seminar, a participant in reported that she was familiar with such a place in the Sedona area. “I’ll be glad to take you there after the seminar,” she said.
I followed her in my car. She drove less than half a mile up the road to Airport Mesa and pulled to the side of roadway. I parked behind her. She motioned for me to follow her. “It’s up here,” she said. We followed one of the well-worn trails up a hill and turned left. As he hiked, she talked to me about her experience. “Whatever you do, don’t go don’t go down into it. I brought a friend her once and we just sat on the edge for about an hour. When we got home, he had large blisters on the bottom of his feet and he hadn’t felt a thing while we there. I wouldn’t let my own feet hang over the edge for anything.”
Quote from my book: ‘The area was simply a large depression in the giant red rocks. Cactus and desert growth were thriving in it as well as the rest of the mountainside. At one side of the depression was a cliff edge, dropping several hundred feet to the valley below. The view from here was magnificent.”
My guide wished me good luck and was quickly gone.
I was carrying Lyall Watson’s paperback book in my pocket. I sat down opened it: Quote: “Navigation is bedeviled by the fact that the earth’ magnetic field is riddled with local deviations and irregularities. These faults have been very carefully plotted and the most persistent of them have become quite notorious. One of these lies off the Bahamas Islands (the Bermuda Triangle), another in the English county of Sussex, and a third near Prescott in Arizona.
Later, my wife and I explored healing in Airport Mesa Vortex to good effect. In the 40 years following my initial experience I have enjoyed the area hundreds of times, and have yet to experience the slightest blister of feet of anywhere else of on my body.
Library research provided the following substantiation (from “Sedona Life” magazine, “Religion of the Red Mountains” by Heather Hughes):
“Indian legend tells us that there are four places in the world designated as “power spots” and that these four broken into two plus two—two positive and two negative or two “light” and two “dark.” It is believed that the two positive in the world are Kauaii, an island in Hawaii . . . and Sedona, both red rock countries. Sedona and Kauaii, the Indians say, are vortexes of energy in which the Great Spirit gives birth to rainbows.
“Indians tell us that the towering crimson peaks stimulate sensitivity and that a man realizes his true dreams and ambitions. They also say that the mountains are like a great magnet and that people are drawn to them because it is the home of the Great Spirit. Amid red-rock country, it is said that man comes face to face with himself and the potentials of his nature.”
Sedona played a big part in Sutphen’s research and seminars. During a major publicity tour sponsored by publisher, Simon & Schuster, Dick appeared on ABC’s “Good Morning American,” he conducted the first nationally televised past-life regression on Tom Snyder’s NBC “Tomorrow Show,” and “The David Susskind Show” developed a two-hour reincarnation show featuring Dick.
A national seminar tour followed and in every city the participants asked Sutphen to draw them a map of how to find the Sedona Vortex. One of Dick’s early seminar participants was psychic Paige Bryant. “She attended with her artist boyfriend and was fascinated with my description of the vortex and my experience with the psychic energy,” Dick explains. “The next time I returned to Sedona, she had announced she discovered the vortexes and had added several new locations as well.”
Dick’s research into psychic phenomena and hypnosis led him to write about his experiences and the true cases he came across in his seminar and private practice. He has gone on to become a best-selling author, writing many metaphysical books, and an acknowledged leader in psychic research around the world. His million-copy best seller, “You Were Born Again to Be Together,” (Simon & Schuster 1976) still sells well after being made into an eBook for it’s 40th anniversary.
Dick and his wife Roberta met in Sedona in 1999. “Over the years that followed, we met occasionally at a seminar or on the road. She was a chief on million-dollar yachts and I conducted seminars all over the world. In the mid-2000’s
we began to talk on the phone. She is a natural psychic Medium—the best I’ve ever known. She says I was the only person who didn’t think she was crazy. I fell in love with her conversations. In 2010 she had a little time off and volunteered to help me run a seminar in Orlando. We talked night and day. By the time we had spent three days together I was in love with her words
Today, we’re married and we call Sedona home. I’m writing a new book and she runs Valley of the Sun Publishing. “We’re both artists and she designs new covers for our lines of books, CDs and MP3. Roberta is in the process of getting all of my recorded and published works up on our website. It’s a huge task and I’ll be eternally greatful. Six hundred titles are currently available. Now, she has talked me into writing my biography.” www.dicksutphen.com
“I am often asked to work with people as a hypnotherapist. When Roberta and I combine our talents and work together we get some incredible results. We only see a limited number of clients these days, but it’s always the favorite part of my day. For more information: 928-554-1333.
